SOCIETY PAPERS
EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE. EXTRAORDINARY NEWS
Dearest gentle reader,
With the arrival of spring comes the convoy of carriages waiting in front of St. Jame’s Palace. The day the marriage-minded misses are presented to Her Majesty the Queen is one, if not the most important event of the season. Only a glimmer of displeasure and a young lady’s values plummets to unthinkable depths. Indeed, a terrifying day. Especially for young ladies like Miss Mary Stewart, who lack both in talent and agility. Not only did she trip in her ill fitted dress twice, she also pretended to have fainted in a very poor way. Any lady with a newfound interest in amateur dramatics would have played it better. Her poor acting did in fact not amuse Her Majesty. It only opened her eyes for this season’s Incomparable. Not only has the young Miss Augusta Baillie charmed her with her gracious manners but also with her delicate smile. Truly a diamond of the first water. Hopefully the Queen plays her cards well or else her diamond crushes under the pressure. In the end do debutantes not have more in common with frail flowers than solid stones? One misstep, one malicious rumour and they falter, plummeting into an abyss of social disasters and likely spinsterhoods. Just like flowers who wither with one drop too many and a wind too heavy.
Yours Truly,
Lady Whistledown
